A dealership has a problem that most retailers do not: the product in the window is worth more than anything you could put on a screen. Block the glass and you have hidden a £60,000 car to show a video of a £60,000 car. Every dealership display decision comes back to that trade-off, and it is exactly the problem transparent LED was built for.

The showroom window

Dealership glazing is typically full-height, 3 to 5 metres tall, facing a road. Pedestrians pass at 2 to 4 metres. Drivers see it at 15 to 40 metres and at speed. Those two audiences want different things from the same piece of glass.

  • Upper band, road-facing — the top 1.5 metres of glazing is above the cars anyway, so a coarse pitch here costs nothing in visibility. P6 to P10, high brightness, big simple messaging that reads at 30 metres from a moving car.
  • Lower band, at eye level — this is where the cars sit behind the glass. High transparency is non-negotiable. P3.91 at 75–80% transparency lets the vehicle read clearly through the film while still carrying model names, finance offers and specification callouts.

Splitting the window into two bands with different pitches is the single most useful thing we can tell a dealership, and almost nobody does it. It costs less than a single fine-pitch run over the full height and it works better for both audiences.

Brightness: this is a west-facing glass box

Showrooms are usually designed to flood with daylight, which is good for selling cars and hostile to screens. A road-facing window in direct afternoon sun sees 60,000 to 100,000 lux on the glass. Anything under 4,000 nits will be invisible.

  • Road-facing glazing: 5,000 nits minimum, ambient sensor mandatory.
  • North-facing or covered forecourt glazing: 3,000–4,000 nits is adequate.
  • Interior feature walls, away from glazing: 1,500–2,000 nits.

The auto-dimming point matters commercially, not just visually. A 5,000 nit screen running flat out overnight in a residential-adjacent showroom generates complaints and, in some jurisdictions, planning enforcement. Sensor-driven dimming solves it and is a line item, not a redesign.

Heat, and why it matters more in a showroom

Transparent LED film adhered to the inside face of a south or west-facing window sits in the hottest part of the building. Two consequences:

  • Check the glass specification. Applying film to the inner leaf of a sealed unit changes its thermal behaviour. On heavily solar-loaded glazing this can raise thermal stress risk. If the glass is toughened you are almost always fine; if it is annealed and large, get it checked before you order.
  • Leave the film off the very bottom of the glass. Where cars are parked tight against the window, the heat trap between vehicle bodywork and glazing is real. A 300mm clear band at the base helps and costs nothing.

Inside the showroom

Beyond the window, three positions consistently pay for themselves:

  • Behind the handover bay. A seamless Micro LED wall as the backdrop where customers collect their car. Close viewing, photographed constantly, and the one place where a visible cabinet seam actively undermines the moment.
  • Configurator screens at the specification desk. Fine pitch, 1–1.5 m viewing, colour accuracy matters because customers are choosing paint from it. Insist on factory colour calibration.
  • Glass partitions to the service area. Transparent film here keeps the workshop visible — which builds trust — while carrying service offers and MOT reminders.

Brand compliance

Most manufacturers run a corporate identity manual that governs what a franchised dealership may install in the customer-facing envelope, including screen positions, bezel finishes and content templates. Get the CI document before you specify, not after. We have redesigned enough dealership installations at the eleventh hour to know this is the most common cause of delay on these projects — and it has nothing to do with the screen.
