Architectural LED Display Solutions

Architectural LED is not a screen hung on a building. It is a building material that happens to emit light. That distinction drives everything: the panel has to satisfy the facade engineer’s wind load calculation, the building control officer’s fire and safety requirements, the client’s twenty-year maintenance expectation, and the architect’s insistence that the building still looks like itself during the day. This page covers how transparent LED and laminated LED glass are specified into real facade projects.

Three Ways to Put LED on a Building

1. Laminated LED glass (Glass LED Video Panel)

The LED circuit is sealed inside a tempered laminated glass unit, so the panel replaces a conventional glazing unit in the curtain wall. It is weatherproof on both faces, structurally rated to project wind load, and reads as normal architectural glazing when the display is off. This is the correct choice for new-build facades and major refurbishments where the display is designed in from the start.

2. Transparent LED film retrofitted to existing glazing

Adhesive LED film applied to the inside face of glass already in the building. No structural work, no change to the facade build-up, no planning implication for the building envelope. This is the retrofit answer for existing towers, and the temporary answer for leased buildings.

3. Transparent LED mesh or strip on a secondary frame

LED bars mounted on a lightweight secondary structure behind or in front of the glass line. Highest transparency and lowest cost per square metre at large scale, but the strip structure is visible in daylight, so it suits industrial and entertainment architecture more than premium commercial.

Pixel Pitch on a Facade: Bigger Is Usually Better

Facade audiences are far away. A media wall viewed from 30 metres across a plaza does not benefit from P3.91 — it just costs three times more, drops transparency, and adds weight. At 30 metres, P15.6 is perfectly sharp. Coarser pitch also means fewer LEDs, which means higher daytime transparency, lower power load and lower structural weight. The discipline on facade projects is to specify the coarsest pitch that still works at the real viewing distance.

Light Pollution and Planning

Most jurisdictions regulate facade luminance at night, and applications get refused when this is not addressed. Our control systems include an ambient light sensor with automatic dimming curves, plus scheduled curfew brightness and full shutdown. We supply the luminance data and dimming schedule as part of the technical submission so the planning consultant has what they need.

Working With the Facade Team

We work directly with architects, facade consultants and glazing subcontractors. Send us elevation drawings and we return a panelisation layout showing the panel grid against the mullion grid, achievable resolution, total power load and distribution strategy, cable routing through the mullion cavity, and the fixing detail at the frame. Panels are then delivered to the glazier’s programme with matching edge details, so the LED units install exactly like the adjacent glazing.

Maintenance Planning

The question that decides many facade LED projects is how you service a failed module forty metres up. Three approaches work: inside-access panels, where modules are serviced from the floor plate rather than the outside of the building; BMU access, using the building’s existing maintenance unit; and sealed lifetime units, where laminated construction removes the main failure mode entirely and the commercial position becomes replacement rather than repair. We will tell you which is realistic for your building before you commit, because retrofitting an access strategy afterwards is close to impossible.

Power and Data Infrastructure

A large facade is an electrical project as much as a display project. Plan for distribution cabinets at each level, three-phase supply, surge protection at every panel group, and fibre data runs for distances over 100 metres.
