Shopping Mall LED Display Solutions
A shopping mall is one of the hardest environments to specify an LED display for, and most of the difficulty is not technical. It is that the mall is full of people, the ceiling void is already crowded, the atrium glazing carries a structural rating you cannot alter, and the centre management will not close a trading floor so you can hang a screen. Every one of those constraints narrows what you can actually install, long before pixel pitch enters the conversation.
Transparent LED solves most of them at once. It goes onto glass that already exists, it weighs almost nothing, and it does not block the sightlines and daylight that malls are designed around. Below is how we specify these installations in practice.
The four positions that actually work in a mall
- Atrium glass balustrades — the ring of glass around each floor’s void. Shoppers see it from across the atrium and from the floor below, which gives you long viewing distances and lets you use a coarse, cheap pitch. This is usually the highest-impact position per dollar in the whole building.
- Skylight and roof glazing — visible from every floor looking up. High transparency is mandatory here because the mall depends on that daylight.
- Tenant storefront glazing — the individual shop windows. Shorter viewing distance, so finer pitch, and usually paid for by the tenant rather than the centre.
- Entrance and lift lobby glass — high dwell time, close viewing, worth the finest pitch you can justify.
Pixel pitch by position
The working rule for transparent LED: minimum comfortable viewing distance in metres is roughly the pitch number itself. A P6 screen looks correct from 6 metres and shows visible dot structure at 2. Apply that to a mall and the answer falls out on its own.

Notice that transparency and pitch move together. Wider LED spacing means more open area between the strips. You cannot have a fine pitch and 95% transparency in the same panel — anyone who tells you otherwise is quoting a different product than the one they are describing.
Brightness in a skylit mall
Malls with large skylights are far brighter at midday than most people estimate — commonly 3,000 to 8,000 lux at floor level near the atrium, against 300 to 500 lux in an enclosed corridor. A screen specified for the corridor will look washed out under the skylight by 11am.
- Atrium and skylight positions: 4,000–5,000 nits, with an ambient light sensor to dim automatically after dark. Without auto-dimming a 5,000 nit screen is painful to look at in an empty mall at 9pm.
- Enclosed corridor and lift lobby: 1,500–2,500 nits is plenty.
- Storefront glazing facing an external window: treat it as an outdoor-facing screen — 5,000 nits minimum.
Installing without closing the mall
This is the constraint that kills more mall projects than budget. Centre management will typically give you a trading-hours exclusion — work between 11pm and 6am, everything cleared before opening, no scaffolding left standing.
Transparent LED film is well suited to this because it is applied to the inside face of glass with adhesive, by two people on a mobile platform, in sections. A 20 square metre balustrade run is realistically three to four night shifts including cabling. A conventional cabinet wall on the same balustrade would need a support structure, structural sign-off and a considerably longer possession of the floor.
Plan the power and data route before you plan the screen. Most malls have a service void behind the balustrade upstand or under the floor edge — if there is nothing there, you are chasing a cable route through a finished public floor, and that is where the programme slips.
Mistakes we see repeatedly
- Specifying one pitch for the whole mall. The atrium and the lift lobby have completely different viewing distances. Using one pitch means you either overspend on the atrium or under-deliver in the lobby.
- Forgetting the view from below. A balustrade screen is seen from the floor below at a steep upward angle. Check the vertical viewing cone of the product — some transparent films fall off sharply above 60 degrees.
- Ignoring the reflection on the opposite balustrade. In a four-sided atrium, a bright screen reflects in the glass across the void. It reads as a ghost image and it will get complaints.
- No auto-dimming. Covered above, but it is the single most common comfort complaint after handover.
- Content designed on a desktop monitor. Fine text and detailed imagery disappear at P10. Content for coarse-pitch atrium screens needs to be built at the pitch it will be shown at.

- Atrium plan or section drawing, or a photo taken from the opposite balustrade with something of known size in frame
- Glass thickness and whether it is laminated or toughened, and whether it is a structural balustrade
- Distance from the screen to the nearest and furthest viewing position
- Whether there is a skylight and roughly how bright the space gets at midday
- Available power at the position, and whether a data route exists
- Your working window — trading hours exclusion, night shifts only, or full possession
