Retail is the single most demanding environment for a display. The screen has to be bright enough to compete with daylight through a shop window, fine enough to look premium from the pavement, and installed without closing the store. This page covers how transparent LED, Micro LED and holographic displays are actually specified in retail projects, what each one costs to run, and how to choose between them.

The Four Retail Display Problems We Solve

1. The shop window goes dark

The instinctive answer to “we want video in the window” is a solid LED wall. The problem is that a solid wall blocks the glass completely: the store interior goes dark, the merchandise behind the window disappears, and the shop starts to look closed from outside. Transparent LED crystal film solves this by applying an adhesive LED strip circuit directly to the inside face of the existing glass. Transparency stays at 70–90%, daylight still reaches the interior, and passers-by see both the video and the product.

2. The landlord will not allow structural work

Most high-street and mall units are leased with strict alteration clauses. Crystal film needs no frame, no truss, no drilling and no floor loading — it bonds to glass with 3M adhesive and can be peeled off at lease end. This routinely gets approval where a conventional LED wall does not.

3. Installation cannot cost trading days

A typical 15–20 sqm storefront in crystal film is installed in a single overnight shift of about six hours. The store trades normally the next morning. A framed LED wall in the same window is usually a three to five day job with scaffolding.

4. Close-range content looks coarse

Inside the store, customers stand within a metre or two of the screen, and standard transparent LED at P3.91 or coarser looks visibly pixelated at that distance. This is where TFT glass-based Micro LED earns its price: pitches down to P1.5 transparent and P0.4 opaque, with no visible module seams, so a feature wall reads as a single continuous surface even at arm’s length.

Brightness: The Number Retailers Get Wrong

A display facing a sunlit pavement needs 4,000 nits minimum, and 6,000 nits if the glass faces south with no canopy. Indoor screens more than three metres from a window work fine at 800–1,500 nits. Over-specifying brightness indoors is a common and expensive mistake: it costs more, draws more power, runs hotter, and looks harsh. We ask about glass orientation and canopy shading before quoting, because it changes the answer.

Running Costs

Transparent crystal film draws roughly 130W per square metre average and around 380W per square metre at full white peak. A 20 sqm storefront running twelve hours a day therefore costs a fraction of what most retailers assume — typically less than the store’s lighting load. LED lifetime is 100,000 hours, so a screen running twelve hours a day has an expected service life of well over twenty years before reaching half brightness.

Content That Actually Performs in Retail

  • Design for a three-second glance. Pavement traffic does not stop to read. One message per scene, large type, high contrast.
  • Use black as your background. On a transparent display, black pixels are simply off, so a black background maximises see-through and makes the graphic look like it is floating.
  • Motion at the edges, stillness at the centre. Peripheral motion catches the eye; a static focal element holds it long enough to read.
  • Schedule by daypart. Brightness and content should differ between 10am daylight and 8pm darkness. All our control systems support scheduled brightness and playlists.
