Transparent LED Display FAQ

These are the questions we get asked most often, answered the way we would answer them on a call. Where the honest answer is “it depends”, we have said what it depends on rather than dodging it.

How much does a transparent LED display cost?

Transparent LED film runs roughly $180 to $600 per square metre depending on pixel pitch, with finer pitch costing more. Glass LED panels sit higher, around $400 to $1,200 per square metre, because the LED array is laminated into a structural glass unit made to your dimensions. Seamless TFT glass-based Micro LED is a different tier again — it is specified per project rather than per square metre.

Those figures are for the display only. Budget an additional 15–30% for the control system, power distribution, installation and commissioning. Freight depends on destination and is quoted separately.

How transparent is a transparent LED display, really?

Between 65% and 95%, and it is directly tied to pixel pitch. Wider spacing between the LED strips means more open area and higher transparency, but coarser resolution. You cannot have both.

One caveat worth knowing: quoted transparency figures are measured on the panel alone. Add the glass it is mounted on, any solar film already there and the frame, and real-world transmission is typically 5–10 percentage points lower.

What pixel pitch do I need?

The working rule: minimum comfortable viewing distance in metres is roughly equal to the pitch number. A P6 display looks correct from 6 metres and shows visible dot structure at 2 metres.

Measure the distance to your closest regular viewer, not the average. Getting this wrong is the most expensive mistake in the whole specification, because it cannot be fixed after installation. Full detail on the pixel pitch guide.

Will it be visible in direct sunlight?

Yes, if you specify the brightness correctly. Direct sun on a shop window is 60,000 to 100,000 lux. For a south or west-facing storefront you need 5,000 nits or more. For a north-facing or shaded position, 3,000 nits is usually enough. For an interior position away from glazing, 1,500–2,500 nits.

Always pair high brightness with an ambient light sensor. A 5,000 nit screen running at full output after dark is genuinely uncomfortable and, in some places, a planning issue.

How long does a transparent LED display last?

LED lifespan is rated at 100,000 hours to half brightness — around 11 years of continuous operation, or 20+ years at a typical 12-hour retail duty cycle. In practice the LEDs are rarely what fails first. Power supplies and driver boards are the usual failure point, typically at the 5 to 8 year mark, and both are replaceable.

We supply a 3-year warranty and keep spare parts available beyond it. When you compare suppliers, ask specifically about spares availability after warranty — that is where cheap displays become expensive.

Can it be installed on existing glass?

Yes — that is the main advantage of transparent LED film. It is adhered to the inside face of existing glazing with no frame, no drilling and no secondary structure. At around 1kg per square metre it adds negligible structural load.

Two things to check first. The glass must be clean, flat and in good condition — film will not sit properly on damaged or heavily textured glass. And if the glazing is annealed rather than toughened and heavily solar-loaded, have the thermal stress checked before applying anything to it.

How long does installation take?

For transparent film, a two-person team covers roughly 10–15 square metres per day including cabling and commissioning. A typical 20 square metre storefront is two to three days. Night-work restrictions in malls and hotels roughly double the calendar time because each shift is shorter.

Glass LED panels are faster to install but must be scheduled with the glazing package, since the panel replaces the glass rather than mounting to it.

What is the difference between transparent LED and Micro LED?

They solve different problems. Transparent LED is about seeing through the display — it exists so you do not lose the window, the daylight or the view. TFT glass-based Micro LED is about eliminating the seam — chips bonded directly onto a glass substrate give module gaps around 20 microns, so a multi-panel wall reads as one continuous surface.

How much power does it use?

Transparent LED film averages 90–200 W per square metre in normal operation, with peak draw roughly double that on full-white content. Size your circuit on peak, not average — a 20 square metre installation can pull 8kW on a white frame even though it averages 3kW.

Because transparent displays are mostly open area, they use considerably less power per square metre than a solid LED wall of the same brightness.

Is it waterproof? Can it go outdoors?

Transparent LED film is designed for the inside face of glazing and is not rated for direct weather exposure. It faces outdoors through the glass, which is what almost every storefront and facade application actually needs.

For genuinely exposed positions — an open canopy, a freestanding structure — you need an IP65-rated outdoor product or a laminated glass panel with exterior-rated edge sealing. Tell us if the position is exposed and we will specify accordingly.

What content works best?

On transparent displays, content on a pure black background. Black pixels are simply off, so they read as clear glass and the bright elements appear to float. A white or light-coloured background fills every pixel, kills the transparency effect and looks like a semi-opaque grey panel.

Also: build content at the display’s native resolution and keep text large. At P10, a 3-metre-wide screen is only 300 pixels across. Fine text simply will not exist.

What is the minimum order?

There is no fixed minimum, but below about 5 square metres the fixed costs — control system, freight, commissioning — start to dominate and the price per square metre rises sharply. Most of our projects fall between 10 and 200 square metres.
