LED Brightness (Nits) Explained: Indoor vs Outdoor
“Brightness” on an LED spec sheet is measured in nits (aka cd/m²). It is the number buyers most often get wrong — and the one that decides whether your screen is readable or invisible.
This guide tells you how many nits you actually need.
What is a nit?
One nit = one candela per square meter (cd/m²). It measures how much light the screen throws at your eye. Higher nits = brighter, more readable in light.
For context: a phone is ~600 nits; a TV ~400–1,000 nits; a sunlight-readable outdoor billboard 5,000+ nits.
Indoor vs. outdoor: the brightness split
| Environment | Recommended nits | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Dark interior / control room | 800–1,200 | Comfortable, no glare |
| Lit indoor (lobby, mall) | 1,500–2,500 | Beats ambient office/retail light |
| Shop window, daylight | 3,000–4,000 | Competes with skylight/sun |
| Outdoor / facade | 5,000+ | Reads in direct sun |
Why transparent LED needs more nits
Transparent panels have gaps between LEDs, so less of the panel emits light than a solid screen. To compensate, transparent LED is usually specced brighter than an equivalent opaque wall for the same spot.
Brightness vs. transparency trade-off
Pushing nits means denser, brighter LEDs — which slightly lowers transparency. A window that must stay 85% see-through may cap at ~2,500 nits; a facade that needs 5,000 nits may accept 70%.
Adaptive brightness saves money
A good install uses auto-dimming: full nits at noon, dimmed at night. This cuts power, extends lifespan, and avoids blasting a dark lobby. Ask for ambient-light sensors in the control system.
FAQ
How many nits do I need indoors? 1,500–2,500 nits for a lit retail or lobby space; 800–1,200 for dark rooms.
How many nits for an outdoor transparent LED? 5,000+ nits to stay readable in direct sun.
Is higher nits always better? No — over-bright screens in dim rooms glare and waste power. Match nits to ambient light.
Does transparent LED need more nits than normal LED? Usually yes, because the gaps between LEDs reduce total light output.
